Porting Pains

A few quick note about a few problems that occurred when I ported my blog to Typo.

Firstly, I didn't move all my images over, so any posts that included images from my site, I didn't port. Fortuently, there weren't very many of these. As soon as I get a good elegent solution to uploading images (probably after finals are over), I'll re-post those articles.

Also, I didn't port comments, since it would have taken more time to write a script that could do that properly and I was too lazy to do it. But of course, I never reccieved very many comments in the first place. Hopefully, my site hits will increase now that I am using a blog engine that has trackbacks, RSS and all that fun stuff.

Moving to Typo!!

That's right, my non-existant readers! In a few days my little pet blog software is coming down, and I will be migrating everything to Typo.

Be ready!

New Beginnings

I once read that "personal" blogs tend to attract fewer readers as compared to blogs pertaining to a vast impersonal subject. It seems that popular web logs are not personal journals, and that personal journals tend not to make very much money. Yet here I am, writing a personal blog in hopes of making money through the use of ubiquitous text ads.
But this is not to be a dreary log of the tiresome daily routines of my life, nor is it to be filled with inane and pointless thoughts. I hope to make it somewhat meaningful; interesting to a casual reader who knows nothing of me. I have found that most personal blogs are amazingly pointless, and entirely meaningless to anyone but the blogger and their close friends. When a blog is filled with short entries like "I took my cat to the vet today and I saw Mr. Bosch!" or, "Anyone want to join me for ice cream tomorrow?", its no wonder that personal blogs fail to draw so little traffic.

So by writing meaningfully, and with (fairly) good grammar and spelling, I hope to create literature (literature is such a broad category, even books that begin with "As soon as Elmer saw the duck, he knew it was going to be a bad day..." could be considered literature) that others might want to read.
And so we begin...

Update

I haven't been adding any new content to this blog for a fairly long time, and for the most part, have been spending my time trying to remake the entire blog application. I have come to the conclusion that I'm not the worlds greatest programmer and I can't program an entire web application by myself, when it usually takes a small group of people.

I will be hosting a new blog using Typo, at life.of.ni.42gems.com. This will not be my blog. I will be keeping my blog at 42gems.com, and will probably be using Typo or Mephisto, instead of writing my own codebase.

Sorta closing my site

So I won't be shutting down the whole site, but I will be removing the hosting service. I'll just be hosting my own blog from now on. I don't think people would want to use my site when I can't offer them a unique subdomain.

Anyone violently opposed to my decision? No? All right, cool.

Y'all have a good time now, yeh hear?

Closing site?

I'm thinking about closing down the blog hosting service, generally because it really really sucks. Granted, I had every intention of maintaining this site even after school was out, but now I don't think this could be a viable enterprise. I simply do not have any features, or options that any users would find very attractive.

If I am able to bring this site up to a deccent standard, then I may consider keeping it, as it is I going to try my hand at something else. So all you people that use my site for blogging (that would be zero) and those of you that actually read my blog (still zero), you'll have to move your crap somewhere else.

Referrer Spam…

Amazingly enough, my puny site that draws a few vistors per day, has suffered the attacks of a spammer. Some bugger named Andrei Kislizin, lives in the Ukraine, has been putting up links in comments to sites that sell "viagrax" and crap like that. I ran his IP through whois and blocked all his IP addresses, weeee.

Here's the data that whois gave me:

Code Updates, 14 May ’07

- CSS Fixes:

- Fixed a problem where the text areas were extending too far when using Windows operating system. Although this problem has been fixed in Windows, I now have a problem while running Ubuntu and Fedora Core linux, so I assume that the problem is due to font size. If you're running linux, you may notice that the text areas are a little smaller then the box gray box that encloses them

- Fixed and rearranged some of the options in the text area toolbar. Now it consumes only two lines, instead of three.

- Fixed a problem where Internet Explorer was not rendering the CSS wrong. Before, it was taking the left-hand menu thing and sticking it all the way at the bottom of the page. There was never a problem while using Konqueror, Opera, or Firefox. This problem still seems to persist with IE5 for some reason.

- Things To Do:

- Adding help and tutorial type stuff to make the site more user friendly.

- Improving the home/index page and making it more functional, perhaps adding a 'featured blog.'

- Adding a function to search users and blogs and list them.

- Adding a better form of sorting pictures in the gallery (still a little hazy 'bout what I'm going to do, but I will do something to it).

- A way for people to upload their own stylesheets and make them avaliable to others.
